“Going Commando”

Many of yesterday’s revels included marching bands and men in kilts, which led me to the age-old burning female question – what do men wear under those tartan skirts: boxers, briefs or ???

If you take a scientific poll you will get a variety of answers – everything from “Nothing is worn under the kilt, it’s all in perfect working order” or “The future of bonnie Scotland” or even simply, “Shoes and socks.”

The term for buff behavior under the kilt is often referred to as “going regimental” or “going commando.” Apparently, in the military, where the custom began, and is upheld to this day (except at public events in windy weather) “military practice” is the norm.

However, there is a raging debate that has recently been taken up, particularly by kilt makers who rent their tartan skirts for formal functions. One of the industry’s largest kilt clothiers, Slanj, (http://www.slanjkilts.com/) is requesting that men wear undergarments when wearing their rentals, primarily for hygenic reasons, even though the kilts are dry cleaned after each rental.

Slanj has come up with a friendly little ditty that is posted in all their stores, which reads,."Though Scots like to prance, about in their kilts wearing nae pants, fir the next punter make it fair, dinnae firgit to wear a pair."

Something to consider the next time you see a man in a kilt.

One of my favorite movies is "King of Hearts" in which there's a scene of reveling with Scottish soldiers and French courtesans. The youngest girl asks a Highlander: "What does a Scotsman wear beneath his kilt?" He responds, "Why lassie, there's nothing beneath the kilt," to which the older tart responds, "Au contraire, everything's beneath his kilt."

Omigosh, that is too funny! Can you imagine what the Queen thought when she saw that picture? I have heard she loves a good giggle. That one would have warranted a good belly-laugh.

Thanks Jo! ;-D He-he-he! I sure hope she would have a good laugh - she looked so charming and serene in that photo that my first thought was 'I wonder if she's wondering?'

One of the most bragadocious responses to that age-old question is a wee-bit unacceptable in some social circles: "nothing but lipstick."

I heard a story of what can go wrong when men don't adhere to these rules....at a wedding in Scotland everyone was quite merry and the bride (in her flowing white dress) invited the best man (wearing a kilt) to sit on her lap. The best man was bereft of undergarments and evidently bereft of hygiene as when he stood up and walked away, a brown streak was left on the bride's dress where he had been sitting.

Not such a "Best" man, Anonymous! Funny tale and a lesson learned by that chap.

Hi Anonymous. I would have to take issue with some aspects of that "story." First, no "true" Scotsman would ever allow his Clan's tartan to be soiled in such a manner, even in a drunken state. Mud and blood, yes, but not the other. Secondly, no true Scotsman would ever sit in a lady's lap unless some bodice ripping and breast fondling in a private setting were in store. But he would certainly allow a lady to sit on HIS lap, especially in cool, breezy conditions. I would say this dolt was neither a Scotsman nor "the best man."

Well Captain Mac, you have certainly set "Anonymous" on the straight and narrow! Thank you for your very insightful comments! This post has garnered the most feedback and I truly enjoy the debate! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! I'm glad to know you are out there and reading! :)
